10 Games to Play With Music Note Practice Chips

1. Musical Fishing

Use a magnetic fishing pole to “catch” a chip.

  • Name the note

  • Play it on the instrument

  • Or write it on the staff
    ⭐ Add points for speed or accuracy


2. Roll & Play

Roll a die:

  • 1–2: Say the note

  • 3–4: Play the note

  • 5–6: Play the note with a fun variation (staccato, forte, slow bow, etc.)


3. Note Detective

Pick a chip and:

  • Find the same note on the instrument

  • Then find another place the note appears (different string or octave if applicable)


4. Race to Five

Students draw chips one at a time.

  • Correct note = keep the chip

  • First student to collect 5 chips wins

Great for group lessons!


5. Build-a-Melody

Pick 3–5 chips and:

  • Arrange them into a melody

  • Play the melody

  • Advanced students can write it on the staff


6. Beat the Timer

Set a 30- or 60-second timer.

  • How many notes can the student correctly name or play before time runs out?


7. Character Play

Pick a chip and play the note:

  • Like a robot

  • Like a sleepy cat

  • Like a superhero

Excellent for tone, dynamics, and bow control.


8. Target Practice

Lay chips face down.

  • Call out a note

  • Student flips chips until they find it, then plays it


9. Memory Match (use with multiple sets)

Lay chips face down.

  • Flip two at a time

  • Match identical notes (or same pitch, different clef)


10. Practice Reward Pull

After a focused practice section, let the student pull one chip as a “bonus challenge.”
